Fun Labor Day Road Trips
It's the last hurrah of the summer, before the kids return to school and our thoughts turn to the changing fall leaves. No matter where you are, all across the U.S. there are events for you to enjoy this Labor Day weekend.
New Jersey is a great destination, with its boardwalks and waterparks right on the beach, like Raging Waters at Morey's Piers or Ashbury Splash Park. What could be more relaxing than spending a day floating around a lazy river, while the kids enjoy the more adrenaline-pumping slides and high dives?
Folks in the Denver area can enjoy A Taste of Colorado over the Labor Day weekend, a free festival featuring over 50 local restaurants and food trucks that also includes live music. Kid-focused entertainment can be found at KidzStage and includes magic, clowns and puppet shows. The weekend also includes classic carnival rides.
Myrtle Beach, SC plays home to the Beach, Boogie & BBQ Festival. Even the name sounds like fun! It starts August 29 and goes through August 30, 2014 at the HGTC campus at Grand Park. This festival is all about the BBQ, with plenty to keep you happily entertained between tastings: arts, crafts, a beer and wine garden, fireworks, and a "cornhole tournament."
The 61st Annual Sausalito Art Festival takes place in San Francisco, CA from August 31 through September 2. One of the country's oldest outdoor arts events, it features works by 270 artists as well as live music by Lisa Marie Presley and more. Another event kicking off September 1 is the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival with weekend performances of Henry V on the Presidio's Main Post Parade Ground Lawn.
In the Ozark Mountains you'll find Branson, MO. This little town, with its abundance of live entertainment, rivals much larger cities. It has more than 50 theaters, golf courses, a waterpark, tons of family friendly activities like miniature golf, go-karts, and plenty of shopping. From August 23 through September 2, Silver Dollar City Amusement Park will be the home for the biggest Southern gospel picnic in the country. Enjoy dozens of artists and be sure to try the fried chicken!
Family-friendly Chicago is filled with entertainment for every age. The Museum Campus is home to three popular destinations: The Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, and Shedd Aquarium. The aquarium's dolphin and whale shows are fun for everyone; the planetarium has great sky shows and the added bonus of an amazing view of Chicago's skyline.
Navy Pier offers restaurants, theaters (live theater and an Imax), a giant Ferris wheel and boat tours. The Chicago Jazz Festival runs from August 29-September 1 and features local, national and international arts.
